Martin Marko

“I spent years focusing mainly on commissioned mural work, dedicating most of my time to it, until I realized I also needed to create for myself. While I never stopped working on commissions, I found a new, hidden space within that constant flow — a space where I could fully develop my own practice, which has become deeply fulfilling.

I have no intention of ever stopping painting.”

Martin Marko is a Slovak contemporary artist whose practice spans mural painting, illustration, and studio-based painting. Over the past fifteen years, he has established himself as one of the most active mural artists in Eastern Slovakia, creating large-scale public artworks for municipalities, educational institutions, cultural organisations, and private clients.

His work can be found in public spaces across whole Slovakia. Alongside his artistic practice, Marko has been dedicated to arts education and community engagement. Since 2014, he has led the Graffiti School initiative in collaboration with K13 – Košice Cultural Centres and served as the professional coordinator of collective mural projects for the Use the City Festival between 2020 and 2024.

While large-scale commissions have shaped much of his career, Marko’s recent work reflects an increasingly personal direction. Drawing on years of experience working in public space, he translates the energy, spontaneity, and visual language of street art into contemporary paintings that explore memory, identity, and everyday experience. His works balance technical precision with expressive mark-making, combining the immediacy of mural painting with the intimacy of the studio.

Today, alongside his public art projects, Marko continues to develop a distinctive body of paintings for collectors, bringing the scale, confidence, and visual impact of his mural practice into a more personal and collectible format.
